What Is Rekeying?
Every pin tumbler lock contains spring-loaded pins. When the correct key is inserted, the pins align and the cylinder turns. Rekeying replaces those pins with a new set configured for a brand new key — while the lock body, deadbolt, and hardware all stay exactly the same.
Result: old keys stop working, new keys work perfectly, same security level. Typically $25–$50 per lock, done in 10–15 minutes each.
What Is Lock Replacement?
Replacement removes the entire lockset — deadbolt, knob, cylinder — and installs a brand new one. This makes sense when your existing locks are worn or low-quality, you want to upgrade to Grade 1 hardware, or you want a smart lock with keyless entry. Replacement costs $75–$150 per lock for standard hardware.
